 ~ News and Updates ~

The following article is reprinted from the July 24th edition of the Falmouth Enterprise - The Playing Above the Influence event was held this past Wednesday and it was a fantastic time for all involved.

The Commodores are looking forward to hosting for the 4th time in 2016!

For the third year in a row, Gosnold of Cape Cod is partnering with the Falmouth Commodores to put on "Playing Above the Influence", an afternoon of family-friendly, substance-free fun at Guv Fuller Field.  This year's event will be held Wednesday, July 29th, from 4 to 5:30 PM, before the Commodores game against the Chatham Anglers.

The past two year, Playing Above the Influence has looked - and sounded - like a blast to people passing by: families, young people, and uniformed baseball players trying out police cruiser sirens together, attempting obstacle courses while wearing fatal vision goggles, and tossing baseballs back and forth.  The metallic crashing of bats in a cage equipped with a radar gun as well as a K-9 demonstration put on by the Barnstable County Sheriff's Office added to the good, clean (and noisy) fun - which will all be had again on Wednesday.

The event is free and open to the public, so anyone can stop in and have a slice of cake, take a dive on the slip n' slide to cool off, or strike up a conversation with a local fireman.

Patricia J. Mitrokostas, director of prevention at Gosnold of Cape Cod, expects a big crowd.  At both the Bourne and Orleans/Brewster installments of Playing Above the Influence earlier this summer, more than 350 people were present, and Ms. Mitrokostas reported that they ran out of everything, from T-shirts to cake.

Ms. Mitrokostas co-founded this event three years ago while working at the Falmouth Prevention Partnership and said the idea behind it was to celebrate positive decisions as a community.

"We hear so much about the negatives when it comes to drug and alcohol prevention", she said, "but this event is about the other side: to showcase the people in our community who are making really good choices - like the Commodores - and all the Cape League players".

In order to play in the Cape Cod Baseball League, each member of each team must sign a contract agreeing to be drug and alcohol free.  At Playing Above the Influence, which Ms. Mitrokostas said delivers "a soft but effective message", everyone from young children to parents to teenagers can find positive role models in the young men of the Cape League.

Another influential presence at Playing Above the Influence is Chris Herren, former Boston Celtic, who turned motivational speaker after his struggles with drug addiction.  Mr. Herren, who has spoken on dozens of occasions at Cape schools and community events, was brought on board for this event last year by the CEO of Gosnold, Raymond V. Tamasi.

According to Ms. Mitrokostas, the original idea was to have Mr. Herren mingle with the crowd at the event, answer questions and just "hang out", instead of delivering a speech.  Then Commodores president Steve M. Kostas and Ms. Mitrokostas decided to ask him to speak to the players.

"It was just a spur-of-the-moment decision", Ms. Mitrokostas said, but the response from the players was so positive that she decided to make the team address from Mr. Herren a staple of Playing Above the Influence.

This Wednesday Mr. Herren will interact with families and children as they enjoy a fun, educational wind-up to the baseball game and will speak also to both teams before the 6PM first pitch.
